In Short:

  • U.S. President Joe Biden Explains A New Executive Order on AI
  • This order is the first action of the U.S. government to take equity and civil rights guidance and research on AI’s effect on the labor market.
  • The order is the first significant, legally binding government action on the technology and builds on the White House’s prior voluntary promises obtained from top AI businesses.

President Joe Biden Introduced a new order on artificial intelligence. This order is the first-ever action of our government because of its equity, kind, civil rights guidance, and research on AI’s effect on the labor market.

While all the law agencies had already warned that they were going to apply existing laws to abuses of artificial agencies and Congress had aimed to learn more about technology to introduce new laws, the executive order could have a more immediate impact. According to the senior administration officer who spoke to the reporters on a call on Sunday, it “has the force of law,” like all the executive orders.

The White House breaks down the main components of the executive order into eight parts:

Creating new safety and security standards for AI, including requiring some AI companies to share safety test results with the federal government, directing the Commerce Department to create guidance for AI watermarking, and creating a cybersecurity program that can make AI tools that help identify flaws in critical software

They are protecting consumer privacy, including by creating guidelines that agencies can use to evaluate privacy techniques used in AI.

Advancing equity and civil rights by guiding landlords and federal contractors to help avoid AI algorithms furthering discrimination and creating best practices on the appropriate role of AI in the justice system, including when it’s used in sentencing, risk assessments, and crime forecasting.

They are protecting consumers overall by directing the Department of Health and Human Services to create a program to evaluate potentially harmful AI-related healthcare practices and create resources on how educators can responsibly use AI tools.

Supporting workers by producing a report on the potential labor market implications of AI and studying the ways the federal government could support workers impacted by a disruption to the labor market

We are promoting innovation and competition by expanding grants for AI research in areas like climate change and modernizing the criteria for highly skilled immigrant workers with key expertise to stay in the U.S.

We are working with international partners to implement AI standards around the world.

Developing guidance for federal agencies use and procurement of AI and speeding up the government’s hiring of workers skilled in the field

The orders are taken from the CNBC official website to give you all the exact order details.

The White House deputy chief of Staff, Bruce Redd, said in a statement that this order represents “the strongest set of actions any government in the world has ever taken on AI safety, security, and trust. ”
